Vicenza and Palladio. Vicenza is a stunning and sophisticated city that unites its past with the unique genius of Andrea Palladio. Here, the renowned architect crafted some of his most brilliant creations, including 23 monuments and 16 villas. This has resulted in Vicenza and its surrounding Palladian Villas being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most impressive works of art are found in the old city, where Palladian classicism, inspired by Roman architecture, is blended with the Venetian style. Let’s explore the breathtaking architecture of this inspiring city!

The Basilica, Palladio’s masterpiece in Vicenza

The itinerary to discover Vicenza and Palladio starts from the city’s historical center and its masterpiece, the Basilica. A unique, visionary work that changed the pace of architecture. “It is impossible to describe the impression made by Palladio’s basilica…” wrote Goethe in his Italian Journey. What will be your impression when you walk to Piazza dei Signori and see the splendor of the Basilica Palladiana? Probably the same! Despite the name, the Basilica is not a religious building. It is Palazzo della Ragione (Wisdom Palace), the place where the city was administered, known as the Basilica in ancient Roman times. Today, the Basilica has become a cultural hub and hosts exhibitions and events.

Vicenza and Palladio, refined perspectives at the Teatro Olimpico

The itinerary to discover Palladio’s masterpieces in Vicenza leads you to the Teatro Olimpico. Palladio was commissioned to build a theater for the city by the Accademia Olimpica, but Palladio died before seeing his work completed. The theater was finished by his son Silla and Palladio’s student Vincenzo Scamozzi. Opened in 1585, it is the oldest covered theater in the world. Inspired by the Greek and Roman theaters, it has a large, elliptical-shaped staircase surrounded by statues and friezes. A Greek tragedy, Oedipus the King by Sophocles, was chosen for the first performance, given at the 1585 Carnival. The set design reproduces the seven streets of Thebes, which are glimpsed in the five openings of the proscenium, with a refined play on perspective. A true work of art, signed by Vincenzo Scamozzi, which was never removed again, becoming an integral part of the theater.

Vicenza and Palladio amidst churches and palaces

Near the Teatro Olimpico you can discover another Palladio’s masterpiece in Vicenza, Palazzo Chiericati. Commissioned by the Chiericati family, the palace was conceived by Palladio in an architectural guise not usual for a noble residence. It features indeed empty spaces of the portico and loggias that give the building an airy and open appearance. Inside the palace you can then admire the important 16th- and 17th-century fresco decorations by Brusasorzi, Zelotti, Menarola, and Cittadella. The basement, reopened in October 2012, brought to light the foundations of the ancient Chiericati cottages, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries.

Santa Corona: Palladio, Veronese and Bellini

On the itinerary to discover Vicenza and Palladio, you cannot miss a stop at the Valmarana Chapel. It was designed by Palladio and it is located in the crypt of the church of Santa Corona. A small space yet monumental in scope. In addition to the Palladian Chapel, you can admire Paolo Veronese’s Adoration of the Magi and the splendid Baptism of Jesus, a masterpiece of by the Venetian Giovanni Bellini.

The fairy-tale Giardini Salvi

Although not Andrea Palladio’s work, Salvi Park is worth a stop. Created at the behest of the Valmarana family, they were designed by a student of Palladio and made a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their beauty. Crossing the entrance to this splendid park, you can discover one of the most evocative and romantic spots in the city. In the garden, take your time to relax at the 16th-century Valmarana loggia, overlooking a small stream.

Palladio Museum, an emotional journey between Vicenza and Palladio

The Palladian itinerary in Vicenza historical center can be concluded with a visit to the Palladio Museum in Palazzo Barbarano. One of the most beautiful Palladian urban residences where you can take an emotional journey through the life of Andrea Palladio and his time, discovering the architect’s masterpieces in the Veneto region.

These are just some of the works that best reflect the Palladian spirit: walking through the narrow streets of the historic center or biking through the Vicenza countryside, you will realize how much this area is permeated by Palladian harmony, in all its shapes and sizes. An unmistakable touch that you can experience only here! We are waiting for you in Vicenza!
